I saw my friend Tom yesterday and he started to ask me questions about my weekend.  Check the conversation… 

• Tom        ¿Hey man, what did you do during the weekend?
• Os           I did a lot of things.  I talked, I wrote, I ran, I went out, I danced, i ate, I lived “La Vida Loca”.
• Tom        ¡WOW, you did many things!  ¿Who did you talk with?
• Os           Yo hablÉ  con mi mamá por teléfono.
• Tom        ¿Usted hablÓ  con su mamá por teléfono?
• Os           Sí, yo hablÉ  con mi mamá por teléfono.
• Tom        ¿Usted hablÓ  con su papá por teléfono?
• Os           No, yo no hablÉ  con mi papá pero hablÉ con mi mamá.

OMG!!!  This Tom is really driving me crazy making me say “YES” and making saying “NO” all the time but; I suppose that’s the way to do it.  That’s the way to get “fluent”. 

¿Why don’t you go back and read the diálogo again but this time pay MORE attention to the bolded capital letters? 

É – Ó – AMOS – ARON – Í – IÓ – IMOS – IERON  are the “endings” we need to use anytime we want to talk about PAST. 

#1.  –AR Pattern.  PASADO.

Drop the –AR ending of an infinitive, like hablAR, and add the following endings:

                Yo                            hablÉ 

                Usted                      hablÓ

                Ella – Él                  hablÓ 

                Nosotros                hablAMOS 

                Ustedes                  hablARON

                Ell@s                      hablARON 

#2.  –ER Pattern.  PASADO.

Drop the –ER ending of an infinitive, like comER, and add the following endings:

                Yo                            comÍ 

                Usted                      comIÓ

                Ella – Él                  comIÓ 

                Nosotros                comIMOS 

                Ustedes                  comIERON

                Ell@s                      comIERON 

#3.  –IR Pattern.  PASADO.

Drop the –IR ending of an infinitive, like vivlR, and add the following endings:

                Yo                            vivÍ 

                Usted                      vivIÓ

                Ella – Él                  vivIÓ 

                Nosotros                vivIMOS 

                Ustedes                  vivIERON
