That’s Fishin’ – April 2014

There have been some rare happenings as well. Check out the photo of the ‘Leucistic’ Blue Marlin. This was caught just days before deadline, by the Charter Boat ‘Spanish Fly’ out of Los Suenos. If you’re going to find this kind of fish here, you will find hundreds of thousands of others. Which means you now have to go through the Sport Fishing advertisements in this magazine a little bit closer.

Team Tranquilo – Winning the Quepos Billfish Cup

I’ve had myself a great month, people have really been hitting the water hard, and in case you didn’t know, for those of us who love fishing; we love talking about it more.  So you can imagine what happens when a few of us get together. A few of us got together for the 3rd Annual Quepos Billfish Cup, held at Marina Pez Vela. Altogether, 11 boats competed over the three tournament days, and it was definitely impressive. There was one leader, and one winner for this tournament, and it’s Ken and Amanda Cofer’s boat, ‘Tranquilo’. They took off to an early lead and never looked back. They had Bubba Carter on Tijereta (crazy successful fisherman) chasing them day two and day three, but Tranquilo held on for the win and also took ‘Top Crew’. Tijereta was 1300 points behind in second, and only 200 points separated 2nd and 3rd place with 3rd going to local boat ‘Pez Espada’. Note my previous articles featured Ken and Amanda, and that they have qualified for this year’s World Championship and next years! Fishing dreams are made of this! Great photo by the way, and CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I had the opportunity to enjoy the festivities at Marina Pez Vela, a huge shout out to Andrea, Carter, Jeff, all the peeps in ‘The Bunker’, all the Sponsors, without you, this tournament would not be nearly as AWESOME, and raise money for Charity.

Inshore rooster action Speaking of AWESOME, did you hear about the kid? Yeah, that’s what we’re calling him. ‘The Kid’. Just like Billy the Kid. His name is Caden Alexander, and he won top Junior Angler fishing on the Pez Espada. He’s 7 if my information is correct and this little gaffer brought in 18 Sailfish and a 22 pound Dorado. Ummm, yeah. He’s 7, and by the sounds of it, he can outfish me. Can’t wait to catch up with him when he gets back to get some fishing time in together. Sweet huh?!

In case you didn’t know, the IGFA World Championships are being held here at Marina Pez Vela, again! (Sorry Cabo, but our grounds are better) This year’s tournament kicks off April 6, running through until April 11. THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!!! And don’t you worry because yours truly will be in the thick of it, and you can read all about it in the next issue of Quepolandia! Do not dismay, there will be live coverage – and here’s an idea of the scope of it. IGFA’s Offshore World Championship, Marlin Magazine, Sport Fishing, Salt Water Sportsman, Costa Rica, and Marina Pez Vela will all have a share in media production covering this event. You can also find updates on my Facebook page, and the Facebook pages of the above mentioned.  All of the magazine holdings that are covering this year’s event are part of a parent Corporation, Bonnier. To get an idea of who Bonnier is, I took an exerpt from Bonniers website.

Fishing is georgeous “Bonnier Corporation is one of the largest consumer-publishing groups in America… it is the leading media company serving passionate, highly engaged audiences. With over 750 employees and more than $200 million in annual revenue… Bonnier Corp. is known throughout the industry for its quality writing, design, photography and editorial excellence. The company is also known for producing quality custom publications, television programs, websites, events and marketing programs…”

What this tells me, is that if a muliti-platform media corporation that ‘connects people to their passions’ is coming here to sponsor and cover a fishing tournament; how very lucky the rest of us are, to BE here already, and have that experience in real life

Blue marlin I’m very much looking forward to my next trip out on the water, you can expect some kick ass photos, and hopefully a video link, while I’m not Bonnier, I share my passion as well. Just a different kind of scale friends. No need to fret if you’re only just visiting, my articles past and present can be found on Quepolandia.com, and I post regularly on my FB page.

I’m headed offshore this Sunday, and you’ll hear about that and so much more in my next article. The Offshore World Championships are going to be EPIC, and I cannot wait for the experience. So, until next time friends, keep your sea legs swaying, and your rod hand ready!
