The Snowball Effect #1

¡Feliz Año Nuevo amigos!  ¿How were your holidays?  ¿Did you enjoy them?

Snowball.  It is hard to get one around here, isn’t it?  Well, not this kind of snowball…

This snowball is made of Spanish.  We are gonna start with isolated words and by the end of this article you will be speaking full sentences, actually paragraphs.  Sounds cool, doesn’t it?

For our first Snowball we are going to use the first three “Times Tables Verbs”:  Hablar, Comer, Vivir.  Here we go:

To speak                     ↔         Hablar

I speak                         ↔         Hablo

I speak Spanish                        ↔         Hablo español

To make a negation just put “no” in front of the verb

I don’t speak                 ↔         No hablo

I don’t speak Spanish    ↔         No hablo español

I’m sure you know how to say “much”  ↔  mucho

I don’t speak much Spanish       ↔  No hablo mucho español

To eat                           ↔         Comer

I eat                              ↔         Como

I eat chile                      ↔         Como chile

I don’t eat                     ↔         No como

I don’t eat chile              ↔         No como chile

I don’t eat much chile     ↔         No como mucho chile

To live                          ↔         Vivir

I live                             ↔         Vivo

You know how to say “here”  ↔  aquí

I live here                      ↔         Vivo aquí

I live here in Costa Rica             ↔   Vivo aquí en Costa Rica

You know the Spanish word for “with”  ↔  con

And you know the Spanish word for “friend”  ↔  amigo

¿How you would say “my friend”?  ↔  mi amigo

With my friend               ↔         Con mi amigo

I live with my friend        ↔         Vivo con mi amigo

I live with my friend in México    ↔  Vivo con mi amigo en México

Again say:

I speak                         ↔         Hablo

With my friend               ↔         Con mi amigo

I speak with my friend in México     ↔   Hablo con mi amigo en México 

In Spanish to say “by”, we usually say  ↔  “por”

Say “by”                        ↔         por

You know the Spanish word for “telephone”  ↔  “teléfono”

By telephone                 ↔         Por teléfono

I speak with my friend    ↔         Hablo con mi amigo

By telephone                 ↔         Por teléfono

I speak with my friend by telephone       ↔  Hablo con mi amigo por teléfono

I don’t live                     ↔         No vivo

With my friend               ↔         Con mi amigo

I don’t live with my friend           ↔  No vivo con mi amigo

You know the Spanish word for “but”  ↔  pero

I speak with my friend by telephone       ↔  Hablo con mi amigo por teléfono

In Spanish to “everyday” we can say “all the days”  ↔  todos los días

I speak with my friend by telephone       ↔  Hablo con mi amigo por teléfono

Say “everyday” or “all the days”  ↔  todos los días

Using “todos los días” say:

I speak with my friend by telephone everyday     ↔  Hablo con mi amigo por teléfono todos los días

In Spanish to say “to him” you say  ↔  le

And to say “I speak to him” you use the word order

“to him”  ↔  le  /  “I speak”  ↔  hablo  /  Le hablo

Say:  “I speak to him”    ↔         Le hablo

Say:  “I speak to him a lot”  ↔  Le hablo mucho

Say:  “I speak to him by telephone”        ↔  Le hablo por teléfono

“Everyday”                    ↔         Todos los días

Say:  “I don’t live with my friend”          ↔  No vivo con mi amigo

“But”                    ↔         Pero

“I speak to him by telephone”  ↔  Le hablo por teléfono

“All the days”                 ↔         Todos los días

Say:  “I don’t live in México”       ↔  No vivo en México

I live in Costa Rica         ↔         Vivo en Costa Rica

Say:  “I don’t live in México.  I live in Costa Rica”  ↔  No vivo en México.  Vivo en Costa Rica

Say:  “I don’t live with my friend”            ↔  No vivo con mi amigo

You know how to say “because”  ↔  porque

I don’t live with my friend because          ↔  No vivo con mi amigo porque

I live in Costa Rica         ↔         Vivo en Costa Rica

I don’t live with my friend because I live in Costa Rica  ↔  No vivo con mi amigo porque vivo en Costa Rica

But                   ↔         Pero

I speak to him by telephone       ↔  Le hablo por teléfono

All the days                   ↔         Todos los días

¿Do you know the Spanish word for “well”?  ↔  bien

Say:  “I live well”            ↔         Vivo bien

Say:  “I live well here”     ↔         Vivo bien aquí

 ¿Do you know the Spanish word for “and”?  ↔  y

Say:  “I eat well” ↔         Como bien

I live well and I eat well”  ↔         Vivo bien y como bien

I speak Spanish                        ↔         Hablo español

All the days                   ↔         Todos los días

I don’t live with my friend           ↔  No vivo con mi amigo

But I speak to him by telephone all the days       ↔  Pero le hablo por teléfono todos los días

Now rewrite these lines in Spanish:

“I live here in Costa Rica.  I don’t live with my friend

in México but I speak to him by telephone everyday.

I live well and I eat well.  ¡I speak much Spanish!”
